Blimey! The little black knob on top - when unscrewed - lifts out a thin rod with the damper piston on the end. That's the damper - while it's out - lift the piston and let it fall!

well i put it on the car and found out the screw on the back of the filter was pushing the dash pot over and it wasnt moving properly so i sanded the dash pot and took it for a test drive, its stilll seems to jerk a bit but no were near as much,

and it started to die at speeds so i think i need to wait for my new needle

It MUST rise and fall easily and smoothly........ BGW needle doesn't show in my records.

Filing or grinding the offending bolt would be better than sanding the dash pot.
Have any of the three "ears" that hold the dash pot on got distorted?
I see no mention of the spring that acts on the damper, I trust there is one fitted.

A picture would help, they are supposed to be colour coded but I've never seen any kind of colour on one.
Very interesting that it works OK without the spring though.

The spring!
Pictures of the damper and the inside of the dash pot wouldn't hurt while you are at it.

Don't understand it not working with spring - obviously it will be a bit more difficult to lift WITH a spring than without - but the dropping/closing should be even better!

No - just as useless.[frame]

But you could try the complete carb......

Lets stop beating around the bush!
If a fixing screw on your super noisy air filter has been bearing on the dashpot enough to inhibit the free movement of the piston, then all talk of needles is a bit academic!
Get another dashpot or complete good carb and start from there, using an AAA (I used an ADK which isn't far out, and available from Burlen).

Unseize the spare carb! Soak the bell/piston assembly (I'm assuming that's what's seized?) in boiling water for starters!
