Hi David
Were your bolts threaded all the way down, would that not make them weak as originally they had a centre unthreaded section

If as you think oil was coming past rings into cylinder through gasket up stud and around thread between thread and nut ,would not the oil have been burnt in the combustion of fuel in cylinder.as on my engine the oil coming out seems to be of the same consistency(?) as the oil in the sump.

Yes the bolts are threaded all the way down as no one seems to stock the sidevalve studs. Ive almost done 500 miles since the rebuild and plan to torque the head again at 500. So far no problems, fingers crossed!
