I certainly agree that if it's not possible to return the car - then 'kennatt's solution is the way I would go. If done properly with good welding - I wouldn't even consider it a bodge. But of course it may be other parts of the sill structure are so weak/damaged that the car won't hold it's shape at all until some serious reconstruction/stiffening is applied.
