Thanks for your comments. I'm hoping to have a good look tomorrow in the daylight. The last time it started, I ran a wire from the +ve battery terminal to the +ve coil terminal. I want to check this again, to see if it was just fluke, or if does make a difference. Currently the car won't start at all, so it may help to rule off another item!
The piston does move freely up and down in the carb. I replaced the low tension wire in the carb.
What are the boards views of electronic ignitions? I am wondering if it may be worth installing one, so my father in law never has to worry about points every again? Was looking at these.

Any experiences appreciated!

I fitted the Magnetronic one (looks similar to that, but about £60) a few years ago and have been very happy with it. No more faffing about getting the points gap right every service (I do about 10k miles a year).

There are benefits from electronic ignition systems particulary if you do high mileage. I would not bother for a car that only does 2000 miles a year though. Don't fit it though until you have found out what your problem is unless you are convinced it is the distributer that is at fault... By the way, that kit you linked to is for a 45D and NOT a Minor dist which is a 25D. ALso, I know where you can buy that kit from for about £6

But as I said they are designed for a 45D dist. The Minor is a 25D so it may not fit straight in without some jiggery pokery

Wooooo! Success! Well, it ran for forty minutes, twenty of which were driving it and it fired up again straight away when warm. I plugged a spark plug into the king lead and opened the points with screwdriver. There was a spark, but twas very week and orange. My neighbour suggested turning out the lights, in case the spark was happening somewhere else, and sure enough there was a blue spark in the distributor itself. It looked like the points spring was earthing the spark. A few bends later, we reconnected everything, my neighbour did the timing (statically to about 7 degrees) and it fired up straight away first time!
All i need to do now is go for a good long run, oh well i had better do

Pleased to report that after a weekend of driving, it hasn't missed a beat! Although i think the clutch is on its way out as its very juddery when pulling away, and I suspect it to be a 998cc not a 1098cc! Is there any way of knowing this without looking at the engine plate (which i can't do because its missing)!!

It has the CC cast in on the engine block right hand side as you look at it.

And will be 948 - not 998 - actually has '950' cast in the block - or there will be a little aluminium plate with '1100' stamped on it - front/manifold side of engine.
