I think the spring-loaded needles are supposed to be like that.

The gap on my standard 1098 is 63thou". 0.063"

Well, I checked the damper and the washers are all correct. I haven't got any 3-in-1 yet... I'll found some soon, though. :-?

Shame, another theory dies, one question though, you say washers?
there is only one washer.

I'm sorry, that's my mistake. I mean all the fixtures on the rod, ie. brass cylinder, washer, clip etc.
We took the car out yesterday for a run, it was snowy (actually icy). The car was so damn light and the snow so packed that unless the wheels spun and dug in, the car made no impression on the ground! Which led to some interesting driving.
