I was somewhat amused by Pauls statement that most modern cars end up in scrap yards through mechanical problems. maybe through rust but rarely mechanical. I own four classic cars two American (Desoto,s 1939 &1954) and two English (MM 1952 & 1958) also a 1988 Toyota corolla 1.6 twin cam, which my wife and i have owned for about 10 years, since my father inlaw gave it to us when he lost his drivers liscence through medical reasons.(I alway said that i would never buy a jap car ) In that time all we have spent on it mechanically is new brake pads and linings. it has now travelled about 200,000 km on the original engine, that is over 100,000 miles,and is still running well and still uses no oil (I check it when i think about it ).I admit the paintwork leaves a lot to be desired, the ultra viollet rays play hell with the paint here (NZ) but there is still no rust in it . I was never a fan of jap cars before but now have to admit mechanically they are ahead of most of the rest

Just a thought regarding the insurance of bangers - it may be more economically viable to insure 3rd party only as opposed to tpft. Reason being if your £300 car gets nicked and you claim: - Firstly you won't get £300 back, maybe £200; Secondly your no claims bonus would be lost so your next insurance quote (or a combination of the next couple of years) could be higher than whatever you were paid out for the theft.

As an example, when wife's scooter was nicked she got about £750 from the insurance company for a scooter that was worth a minimum of £1000. Her next insurance quotes were higher by more than £750 and this was without any NCB to lose.

Yes, I've insured it third party only - and I've got a steering lock somewhere in the garage, I'll dig it out and use it for when the car's parked outside at night. To be honest, if someone nicks it (unlikely as there are far more desirable cars all around the area parked on drives and the road) I'll simply report it to the police, the DVLA, and tell the insurance company that it's gone. I'd be far more concerned about the Morris, but at least now he's in a nice secure garage.

Unfortunately although the newer cars on your road may be more valuable they're probably a great deal harder to nick than an older one. Minors can be hotwired in a few minutes, and I wouldn't have thought the Peugeot would be much better.

Trouble is if your car is nicked and you don't claim it still effects your No claims Bonus( if you have told them and I did).

Meh, if it's nicked, I'll probably just write it off as a loss. Unfortunate, but not a lot else I can do. I'll just have to make it bloody hard for them to nick - found my old krooklock, that might do, and the neighbours have a security light that floods the area of road it's parked in. The Morris is in a locked garage.
