I've been working on the engine.
As normal Rogerrust has stripped it right down cleaned and rebuilt it.
It is a 948 rebored +20 thou.
The cam is off a 1098
The head is a 12g940 off a MG one of the valve seats was damaged so I had the valves pocketed by 60 thou rather than pocketing the block.
Duplex chain for quietness.
Carb is a late HS4 with cone filter.
I cut the inlet off a standard 1098 manifold for the exhaust.
The inlet is off a MG 1300 I think.
The gearbox is a recon sprite one it was fitted in the 1988 by the previous owner, but never used. He also fitted a new complete clutch and release bearing so I'll just put them back on.
I'll put some more pics up when its ready to put in the car.

Looks like a great engine Roger. What sort of power are you hoping for?
I really like that bracket for the throttle return spring - looks much better than the fiddly one on the exhaust clamp.

Looks great! Almost tempts me to strip out the engine bay and re-furbish the ancillaries on one of "my" Minors. The Mini spin on kit is a good idea.

I put all the info into WinSU and it came out like this; I've no idea how acurate this is and won't know until spring.

ohh!! the chassis nos are pressed overthere too?? thats kinda good if visible, as in Malta to have the chassis plate sccrewed on is a VRT failure!! (absurd stupid laws of Malta) don't know what the VRT man will think when he sees the chassis plate on the door panel on my van!!!

Roger..
Very nice

have you a code for that engine paint please, I did mine two year ago and it's a lot lighter than that

I prefer your colour, I'm in the process of re-doing the engine bay and if I can get that green I'll re-do the engine while I'm at it

Thanks for the numbers Roger
The last time I bought some was at a show and was promised it was BMC green, it's a lot lighter than yours and some of the others I've seen around. Definately going to invest in some to darken mine down.

Roger that thermostat housing is it the standard minor one, because if so on the 1275 head it will put quite a bend in the top hose it will work OK even though it doesnt look right a much better fitting one is listed under Useful Tips.

Very nice. Mmmmmm.
0 -60mph 19 secs
Sounds about right. I had a similar set up (flowed 295 rather than 940 head) and I recorded a 18 second 0-60 sprint.

Bit of a calamity last night.
The engine and gear box were nearly ready to go in I tightened the head bolts carefully to 10 ft lbs then 20 then 30 then 40 and one snapped! On examination the stud had slightly less thread and the nut had bottomed out and sheared the stud. Unfortunately, just below the face of the block. I drilled it and tried the stud extractor, but it didn’t want to shift and I didn’t want to make things worse. So this morning I took the gear box off again and took the engine back to the engineers to let them get the stud out - £35 should be back on Monday. Oh well could have been worse.
But I’ve lost another week end and spring is on the way. I think I’m going to take a week off before the end of the month and blitz it to try and get back on schedule.

I love looking at stuff like this, really puts all my own efforts to shame.
Just wish I oculd 'borrow' a 2nd car for a few months to let me take the Minor off the road and do it up properly.
Am I wrong in finding an engine and gearbox 'good looking'? I could just stare at that photo for ages.

That engine does look great, what did you use to clean the engine?

Ha, another convert - you can do a good job with the engine in situ - just harder work.
The engine block was in a engine sized dish washer for 24 hrs before the rebore - it gets the oil and grease out of all the hard to get at bits. I think the block would fit in a domestic dishwaher - a couple of cycles would probably do it, but you'd have to wait till the wife was out!
