Thanks, Roy. I just looked in my Metro Haynes manual and it confirms that the thermostat should indeed fit above the heater take-off outlet. Easy mistake to make!

Mind you don't burn your toes with all that new-found heat......

Well, I found a window in the weather this afternoon to remove the thermostat, and swivel the lower heater take-off plate around (so that the ridge for the thermostat pointed upwards) and replaced the thermostat in the middle of the 'sandwich'.

Pleased to report, that the heater now works again! Temperature gauge sits about half-way, so the 88 degree thermostat appears to be holding the engine temperature up a little higher.

Yes, I was grateful for it tonight, in the p*ssing rain, with the windscreen steaming up. The heater seemed to be more effective than yesterday, even though I'd removed the cardboard partially blanking the radiator.

Roll on the cold snap forecast for next week...
