Sorry, but the 848cc was ONLY fitted in the Mini. The Mini was originally designed for the 948cc engine from the Minor/A35 range but was thought too fast and so the 848cc engine was devised.
The In Line A series came in 803cc, 948 cc and 1098cc and all were fitted in the entire smal car range in turn.

CHRISD...I think you will find that the number actually reads 10V-189-E-H....
not LOV..... this prefix(10V) applies for a high compression 1098cc engine
from March 1969 with a Dynamo fitted.

Thanks Willie! :) That would make sense given the age of the car and the fact it seems to have normal performance. The alternator is my addition - sorry I should have made that clearer.

Steve, it's perfectly fine to use blue hylomar on the sump gaskets. I always do.
bmcecosse wrote:No - the 1275 engine needs a different sump - the rear bearing housing is bigger and so the 1098 sump is no use. Is this a 1275 engine ?
The 1275 can use a 1098 sump. I ran one as a daily car for 2 - 3 years with no problems after Simon from Morspeed fitted it.

The 1275 sump has better seal flanges (front & back) though so I changed it when I had the sump off later on for a 1275 one.

Ahh - excellent - thanks Cam - i was told (on here I'm sure) that if I go 1275 i will need to hunt down a sump too. So - now all I need is a block - I have everything else! Anybody got an old one ? I don't mind organising a rebore. If i don't get one soon - i can see me modifying a Mini block - of which i have a surplus. Just need to add a shaped piece to the rear bearing housing to match up to what I now know is the 1098 sump. I can see it my mind's eye already - properly engineered of course!

cheers cam, filing hieght off seal housing and trimming cork seals has greatly improved it , still a drop when run up hot in the garage , nothing really, mot is booked for a week saturday so a road test will test the sump, steve

Sorry, but if you follow that link and click on the engines tab it says 848cc Mini 948cc A35 etc

Yep but where that link goes does say they fitted the 848cc to late A35 vans 1956 to 1958 . Hence my question where did they get a 848cc rear drive crank from cos its not the same as any other rear drive crank.

I've also seen this said in the 'A-Z of cars 1945-1970' about the last vans having 848 engines.

Fair enough, and I'm entirely happy to be proved wrong - just curious as to why it isn't said in the other books. I'd be delighted to be wrong, aksherley - something else to dream of finding :D

Ah-ha - so I was not dreaming ! There are some 848 cc in-line engines out there. Who will be first to find one ?

Just think BMC with that crankshaft you could bodge up a 1071cc Minor :D

Not sure how the crank bearings would pan out though

Yup, hence the '------'. Bigger in tems of perceived sportiness as well as size, I guess :D

looked at the link, and no mention of morris minor vans using the 848 on later models.
only mentions a35 and mini

Maybe it was just the A35 then.
You are right Paulk - the 848 crank should be good for lots of revs (8000 or so) - but it won't fit the 1275 block. Best to hope for really is a short stroke 1000 cc engine using 1098 block bored + 60 or so. But - unless there is a competition class need - what's the point!
