there's a red and white wire in the loom with a clip on the end of it, I guess this goes in the under dash switch you mentioned.[frame]Image[/frame]

The bundle of wires there;- white/red, brown/blue and the double white all go to the back of the ignition switch.
The white/red is the starter wire, trace it back to the starter solenoid!

I believe its already been covered but the wires youve pictured are for the ign switch. the two whites are for the fuel pump/ign coil, brown blue is for the voltage regulator and the white red is the switched supply to the start solenoid.

They should all go to the back of the Ign switch. Is your pickup a central dash mounted ign switch or steering column mounted switch like mine?

Hi theres some confusion here!

The panel light wires are Red with a white trace line (narrower of the two colours) and do run to the little sliding panel light switch under the dash. The one shown in your photo is White with a red trace line and as stated above goes to the ignition switch and is not related to your panel lights at all.

Why car makers used these similar colours for different circuits is beyond me :( I suppose they just ran out of combinations!

Another problem here is if this van is a late Minor. My Minors are all "late" cars (68, 69, 70) and all have exactly the same loom. However, none of the "late" Minor 1000 wiring diagrams I've seen are accurate. The wiper motor, for example has three connections to it and the diagram only shows one live and one earth. The wiper switch has three wires going to it, yet the diagram only shows two. The heater blower on late cars also appears to be connected to the wiper switch, yet this is not shown on the diagram.

Does anyone have an accurate late minor 1000 wiring diagram??

I have all the workshop manuals and the PDF version on the web and these are all wrong in these areas.

Probably the is one somewhere, I've found it better not to treat wiring diagrams as carved in stone, they don't seem to be.

A better approach for mystery wires is to trace them to the other end and work out what what they are for.

Are they live all the time, or only with the ignition on is a good start, where is the other end is handy too.

Steve to answer your question the starter is mounted centrally on the dash, the switches are all wrongly located I know. Ive got the pump wash wipe button to fit and the starter, got one with a lock barrel and key on order. Thanks for the replies chaps, lots to go on there, the electrical meter will come in handy I suspect.[frame]Image[/frame]

thanks Matt, very handy info, thanks for taking the time to do that so well, no doubt where to re position those, but what are you guys on about 20mph? the only way I'll get her up to 20 is by getting half the neighbourhood to get off the couch and push. Mind you thats quite an idea, could bring the neighbourhood together. Not long now though, the starter is due in next, then the exhaust, then the battery and then, ignition time. I'll need a NASA style countdown on the big day. Watch this space.

The speedo needle is on the wrong side of the needle stop pin. Time to dismantle again.

the needle stop pin is a wire like thing that is just at the end of the white lines indicating what speed you are at.

So here goes. I may aswell connect up the wires to the lighting and wiper switches on the dash, trouble is there should be a green wire going into the wiper switch and apart from those green wires to the back of the speedo I can't see a spare green. the wiper switch on the right of the picture has a black/ green & black.
the lighting switch on the left has blue, brown blue, and red green going in. i may have to correct the orientation of the wiper switch it might be upside down.

the connections to the speedo are all clearly labelled up with tape, wouldn't want to mix those. I wonder if one of those top green wires goes into the wiper switch, there's a double and a single.[frame]Image[/frame]

having had this apart recently it was easy to strip and assemble correcting the speedo needle position to above the stop wire, as several of you so kindly pointed out, any constructive critisism is gratefully appreciated, many thanks. Ive also re positioned the buttons to their correct stations, though I may have the wiper one upside down.[frame]Image[/frame]

When I saw your speedo photo it bought back memories. I'm not the only one that has done it. It is a bit like trying to start the car over and over again, only to finally see the rotor sitting on the bench.

remember where that fuel gauge needle sits at 'empty' -- you don't want to be running out! (might need a replacement fuel gauge for convenience)

re the wiper switch, it sould go all the way up towards the top, and come central on the way down
