I'll have to put up with the bonnet gap for now. Shouldn't take much of a turn to adjust it correctly. It all looks ok with the badge covering up that hole.[frame]

looking at the original clock front face, I'd like to re use the original one, rather than purchase a repro or pro restored. Not much info on how to strip this...[frame]

the clock rear surface, lots of rust there, looks like a sprung fit bezel, it I get that off I may be able to tidy up the flaking chrome and spray it silver.[frame]

davidmiles wrote:Thanks John, the catch needs renewing in that case, it was jammed hard and there's no way that top nut is going to turn, there's also a slot at the top you can access through the badge hole, not budging,( even with bulging temple veins) when I fit a new one that'll tighten down the bonnet nicely, and remove the gap.[frame]

Get it off the bonnet and get some heat on it and it will move! (even a blow lamp might do the job). But, its not the end of the world the front of your van doesn't look too bad for now.

I'll give that a go, wet weather in the extreme today, so it was working on the workshop bench stripping the clock in the dry.[frame]

to get the glass out it's best to work from the back bending back the tabs and sliding the unit out from front to back...[frame]

the inner and outer chrome bezels are well corroded, after a wire wheel in an angle grinder did it's stuff they were ready for a liberal application of krust and an overnight dangle, tommorow a fresh coat of acid primer, primer and silver paint.[frame]

The paint won't stick very well to chrome. Best to take it to a chromers, and they will strip the chrome for you. Takes a couple of minuets.

I like your alternative use of brake springs to hold up the parts

The bulbs from the original speedo clock don't seem to fit the new loom connections, the old bulbs are screw threaded, I wonder if I should buy similar bulbs with a different connection.[frame]

Stick with your new bulb holders and buy new bulbs, rather than hack the new loom about, splicing in
old wiring/ bulb holders. It would only add to the " potential " for electrical faults, down the line.
Try either

Order a few spares, to store in the glove box/ boot/ spares box, at the same time.

its the metal stamping on the new looms that is the problem, of course they should be threaded bulbs but they are nigh on impossible to fit in the new bulb holders on the new loom
i have also had this problem

Modern bulbs from Halfords fitted in ok, but there is only four bulb fittings on the new loom, compared to the six positions on the original speedo, puzzling.[frame]

Here is a shot of the back of the speedo clock using flash only to illuminate it. (Blimey, look at all that yellow primer paint)
In this shot you can see the old, cut red and white wire that doesn't have a modern loom counterpart, what to do?

I've got a feeling there is a little sub loom for the speedo lighting I don't think its Red though, could easily be wrong.
I bet there is more paint in that area than there was from new!

The speedo illumination lights, with the red/white wires, are wired to the little slide switch that lives under the dash (the one that baffles a lot of new owners). Another wire, should be red, goes from the other side of the slide switch to the park circuit off the main light switch. This would have been through a double bullet connector.

Thanks Roni, thats a little gem of information there, firstly The slide switch of which you speak, it's missing on mine, so there's a little part I need to get. This view is the underside of the dash.[frame]

the red tracer white wire powers the speedo illumination bulbs, and yes, the red and white wires either side show this, you can see the cut red/white wire on the drivers side in the dash in this view.[frame]
