If only!

Mystic Morley could have had another 2 hours sleep rather than parking up on the M40 waiting ages for a 12 tonne lorry to be removed from the single lane... Also I could have predicted my brakes seizing up in traffic at Stokenchurch on the way back, forcing me to pull over until they cooled off!
So next weekend I need to change the rocker cover gasket, the fan belt and work out exactly what's blocking the brake fluid on the o/s front.

Yeah, I took a fair few. Mostly of Judge's (Bill's) OJO. I REALLY want my '52 on the road now!!
I have uploaded the pictures to our branch webspace but I have not done a page yet. Should be done tonight then I'll post a link on here.

Well nice to meet a few of the Virtual people in the flesh and I think a good day was had by all those that managed to make it including `Judge` who was able to point out what was wrong with number 1.
I think Chris`s new nickname of Slick is a bit unfair as there can`t have been more than 1/2 pint under the car, was it all caused by the rocker gasket Chris ? and your brakes sound a bit like an iffy flexi hose I am sure you will let us know and at least you made it home unassisted.
And thanks to Ray for the original idea and those that helped him and as Andrew said its another 1st not just for the Club but the Classic car movement, Fantastic

it could be a sticking wheel cylinder? when they get a bit corroded it is common that the sprignforce isn't high enough to pull the brakes back. Then when it heats up the shoe expands causing progressively more heat. The heat can then make the piston even more prone to stick.
And sorry for the nickname 'slick' - it was more like quarter of a pint then half a pint, but it goes a long way on tarmac... ;-)

Probably less than 1/2 pint of oil, more like a 1/4. However it's a lot more than usual so a gasket must have perished en-route. Hopefully it's the rocker cover gasket which is simple to replace. As for the brakes, the flexi hoses are only 3 years old so I'll be very annoyed if these are to blame. In fact every component on that side was replaced in 2001 (except the copper pipe from the 3 way union) and the cylinders are Lockheed originals so they shouldn't be sticking. I guess it's time for new brake fluid as well because the boiling point decreases with age. This doesn't help either when the brakes heat up in heavy traffic.
The journey was a nightmare

but I really enjoyed Gaydon and meeting the regulars. Perhaps a Saturday in term time would be better for Rally II though. NWL576 doesn't look like it would be easy to get out from the exhibition area although the mud splashes on the sills made me think it
has been used.
Perhaps Ray's new name should be
'CHUGGER'. The interesting exhaust note of his split screen traveller pulling away sounded a lot like a tugboat!

Even the lockheed cylinders are now made in Italy and not the UK but I would like to think its to a higher standard than the pattern ones.

Are they?? They moved all the ongoing business out to Italy a few year back, but I didn't think they shipped out all the odds and sods of 40 year old aftermarket parts, (which were mainly done by random subcontracters due to the small batch sizes)
The remaining UK production was sold to a Chinese outfit last year (missing pensions liability mallarky made the national press)
The AP logos belong to Delphi distribution so parts in an original looking box could be pretty random if they chose to do it that way.
It's still nice to think they are higher standards, but often you are at risk of paying more money just for a box that looks like the ones from 15 years ago.
'Chugger'
well on the basis that the guy only bunged the engine back together yesterday afternoon when we threatened to buy the car, I'm surprised nothing actually fell off. The most amusing bit was when he cut the frayed end of the choke cable and it didn't even reach the carb anymore...
Where there's a will there's a way and being able to turn the starter motor on from inside the engine bay means I can get the old gal going with one finger on the choke and another finger on the throttle

Only found it out earlier this year talking to an autojumbler at Enfield motoring pagent who only sells new parts, who said that he and a couple of contacts buy them direct in small batches direct from the manufacturer.

Date and venue TBD.
Next years should be a little bit further south (not too far from London?)
We need a local volunteer to pick out a suitable venue....
