I don't have a heated rear window in Hebe and wish I did... and the traveller had one. And it always misted up (Perhaps because it was well restored and there were no awful gaps!)

That's a novel, but drastic method of clearing the rear screen. Is it a West Country practice?

Yes The heat from the heads warms up the car windscreens very well

ARGH! So I re-re-fixed it yesterday, taking the paint off; sticking resistance strips (from the original kit) back in and putting little dobs of paint on the joins. I tried switching it on this morning while I was removing the snow and.... gah. The same (ARGH) centre strip as failed before is now failing at the other end:



I'd like to clarify that it was stuck to the window just fine before it started to go brown and peel itself off... and smell of burning.

Any suggestions for what I can do? Or is this a disaster that should be removed and forgotten about nicely while I save to fit a proper one?

Kate, the shop half-way down Filton Ave sells that condutive paint. Perhaps some new stuff???

The paint's not the problem, sadly. This is a previously unrepaired section of the thing which has now decided that it is going to start to fail...

It's a pity, but I think it's a dead screen heater. Sorry

It might be old and was a sod to fit straight and the element looks like bars across the back window (alright it's not exactly straight!) but it works perfectly.

Kate, I know it's a real pain in the bum but I'd just disconnect it for now and save for a proper heated rear screen. Looks like that version is pretty awful.

Okay... any suggestions for getting the glue off the window (*sighs*).

I think I'll write to Bull Motif, 'cos I really feel a bit aggreived by this one, I was willing to accept it was my bad - and that I'd managed to get some kind of tiny crease or unstuck bit, but now it's just failing in different places I think I can say it didn't work properly.

Acetone - AKA nail varnish remover, Hammerite thinners, the stuff you can buy to clean fibreglassing tools...

Kate, I would not bother removing it. I'd leave it there until you replace the glass with a proper 'internal to the glass' one. Mine does not obstruct the view too much.

I was going to get mine off Gracie's back window but the screen wil have to come out soonish to replace the seal so I'll just put a different (clean) glass in.

Any suggestions for what I can do?

you could try for a full refund - you're entitiled to one according to the sale of ggods act 1979 - item was not 'fit for purpose'

I havn't tried it yet (Sorry Willy and everyone else, I havn't yet done the cigar-lighter... anyone know anyone who can procrastinate longer than me? I wouldn't like to meet em..) - BUT, I bought a small car fan heater that plugs into cigarlighter, off ebay a bit back, on SR's tipoff (he hadn't tried it either though!)

I've plugged it into someone's else's cigar-lighter to see if it worked though, and it seems to blow quite a lot of nice warm air. I reckon once I get round to installing it, it should work fine on the rear window, and will sit nicely on the back shelf... It also only cost £13, so bit less painful to the pocket than a proper demisting window....and they seem to be a lot cheaper on ebay if you look.

I promise to let you know how well it works when i get round to it..... maybe by next winter!! ;-)

Bit random - but how does one define a world war? Does it have to have most of europe involved (who cares about the rest of the 'world') or genuinely global, or just america, britain, some other odds and sods, and iraq? Just wondering about this...

Back on topic. THIS WEEKEND I'm going to have a go at wiring. Watch this space (for the explosion). I havn't really had any problem with misting lately though... so might need to wait for a really cold day for the result.

Not really the place for this type of discussion, but I would imagine that it consists of getting the major world powers involved. In other words, the ones with the BIG GUNS as in the last 2 world wars. People do 'care' about the rest of the world, but they don't tend to be in the 'world-wars' (other than having foreign powers fight through their country) as they don't have the capability to blow each other to bits. A nice situation if EVERYONE was like that, but a bit dodgy if not!
