That was incredible research - you know, some people get degrees for less
yeah, but I bet it would be a BA......
<sniggers arrogantly>
What, you've got some sort of engineering "qualification"? I'm SOOOOOO sorry
*Just plain sniggers knowingly*

In my day a masters was just for people who were feeling cosy at uni and therefore not willing to get out into the real world and use their knowledge ;) - I left my masters course after getting batchellors and have never regretted it.
These days it's slightly different as it seems the BEng is getting weaker and therefore the institutions now want Masters level.

Yup - a whole list of them. Much prefer working for a living though!

I've got a BEng and I know you get a TEng with an HND and an MEng with masters so if you get a PHd is that a PEng?
To be fair I'm much happier Bending and hitting metal .
Could'nt afford to do it these days anyway. I came out of Uni with £2500 debt in '95 and thought that was horrendous!

so if you get a PHd is that a PEng?
unfortunately not - PhD is a doctorate of Philosophy, whichever subject you do. I guess once upon a time the high level of achivement must have brought you into many not-proven areas thus being of 'philosophical' nature.
Wow! I think all threads are now going off at a tangent - I'll take part responsibility on this one

Actually nowadays they do an EngD which is an engineering doctorate. Although not a lot of universities offer it. How it differs from a PhD I don't know but I suspect it's more practical based, rather than the pure abstract research that a lot of PhDs are. I would have considered an EngD if my university had offered it, but if a PhD is good enough for Einstein then it's good enough for me!

Well...

Masters level was SUPPOSED to be the next level up. Sort of allowing you to manage the BEng/BEng(Hons) engineers. With the decline in quality recently a lot of masters students (Msc rather than MEng in my experience) have trouble crossing the street on their own!
Ray took the non-academic route (HND) onto the degree which is great for practical 'hands-on' type work. We need more of these type in the world!
Practically now, Ray did the right thing in leaving after his bachellor's degree as in my view master's degrees are not worth the paper they are written on. After seeing (and marking) quite a few masters modules / project reports I am amazed by the lack of understanding that some of these people have. Mind you most of them have just paid for their qualification. The system is VERY corrupt!
But the way to ensure a good degree is to make sure it is accredited by an institution such as IEE or IMechE.

Like I don't have any degrees. Unless utter stupidity and sheer luck qualify me

Yes, of course. I forgot about that one and probably lots of others too, but as long as it's accredited by a decent institute.
Onne, degrees certainly do not maketh the man! (anything but!).

that is the conclusion I made. sheer luck will do the job for me!

What I reckon is that most people who get engineering degrees don't really have a clue about how to actually make anything! sure they can do the maths to work out a large amount of things, but couldn't actually put them together! (I don't see myself in this category but I know oh so many people who most definately are!)

Don't talk to me about student debt... For part of last year I was paying £30 replayments on my loan, and accruing £30 interest simultaneously...
Anyhow, moving back to Magnetos again... Anyone know for definite why they stopped using them? Did Morris ever use them on the early Cowleys? Why the change? Simple cost-cutting?
