Lol. Surprisingly enough, got it from ESM. But I've since ordered (and got) a nice, solid, cast one complete with weight .... It's weighting (sorry) to go on when I've got a chance. At the moment the one on Hebe is off Rebecca's old engine

Solid cast with weight is presumably in fact a crank damper - there should be a rubber insert bonded between the centre part and the outer section. Return the shattered bits to ESM and DEMAND a full refund. You (and ESM) were lucky it didn't do any damage when it broke up. Glad you're fixed up ok.

Yeah. I was (luckily) not on the main road when it happened. Considering I do about 60 miles of motorway driving a day it was very lucky. My engine has sounded rough though since it happened.

The new one is all one-piece, so I can't see any rubber on it at all.

Basically, it's a standard pully (cast) with a weighted section on the front, maybe 1 inch in diameter beyond the "v" of the pully. there's two holes either side of the crank shaft hole (presumably to aid fitting and removal?)

I <i>think</i> that what I'll do is drive Hebe to the rally, but not let her go above 4k (cause that's when she starts vibrating madly) and drive her next week (when I've got my voice back that is - otherwise you lot on Sunday can have one very quiet nikki!). The week after that I've got off (half term) so hopefully I can get one of the spare engines fixed up and fitted ready for the following week. I say... "hopefully..."

I think it'll help you learn a lot more about engines

... and will probably end up with you having a rebuilt engine at lower cost than to buy one outright. It's a win-win situation!

Just do it - you KNOW you want to. Tons of tools on free loan from here, too, should you need them.

Hmmm It is very tempting

So give in to temptation. For once...

What's wrong with the spare engine - does it really need re-building ? And is it your engine that is vibrating - or the transmission/wheel balance. If you rev the engine when out of gear does it 'vibrate' ? If it's bad it could be the crank is cracked or even broken.

I'm wondering if it's something as simple as a high speed misfire causing poor balance. Although it could be something more terminal of course
