I would go with "Judge" s suggestion as being a concours man he knows what looks original.
So, deal with any rust on the car, then spray on stonechip coating followed by body colour paint.

As an added protection I would , etch,prime,stonechip,prime again,basecoat the colour then add three coats of a good clear coat. Result original looking paintwork with ultra high gloss which has much better resiliance than a standard solid colour.

No, paintable undercoat might be horrible brushed on underseal that lifts and traps moisture, I was referring to the much better spray on stonechip coating.

The actual factory finish was body colour.
My 1969 Traveller in Almond Green had a smooth black finish, where it hadn't been tampered with, this was very easy to see once all the oil had been removed from around the rear axle.

No it wasn't, I have all the history with the vehicle including the original service book and registration of sale from BMC. The dealer was Wadhams Ltd of Aldershot and was sold to a local gentleman. I have only recently started to strip the underside to prepare for painting and should have some pictures somewhere, which I will attempt to post.

As promised here is a picture of the underside of our morris traveller, if you look carefully around the rear of the propshaft tunnel and the area around the axle you can see the black paint and it is original.

I think mine was the same actually - most of it had been painted over but the more inaccessible bits were still black.
