With the late breather you can move the air filter intake quite a long way forwards to access cooler air but you have to take it right off (you can't just loosen the wing nut and rotate it or it will hit the float bowl. Eventually it will hit the oil separator can. In my case there is a float bowl heat shield in the way as well. When moving the air intake care must be taken not to jam it against the jet and obstruct proper operation of the choke (which drops down the jet).

Bill, quite honestly I don't even know why you are making a big deal of this, I said at the beginning it was interpretation and what has been 'picked up' over the years.
The inlet pointed at the rocker cover will be using air cooler than from directly at the manifold.
But the facts are, as presented by yourself, that the position you advocate requires a nonstandard hose length.
Any BMC mechanic using the BMC manual is going to work with the hose he has, the only one the Parts Dept stocks.
Don't forget that note in the manual was aimed at the BMC mechanic.
The hose you have shown which esm supply ( without qualification of fitment details) is not the hose for the 1098. See the AKD 3541, esm are good not perfect.
You can point the inlet wherever you like but please don't insist yours is the only way.

I'm not making a big deal Berni it was just a chat about it. Sorry if I've bothered you with my comments, it was just a spin off from the OP. Im not arguing with you simply discussing.
You must know from my other posts I'm very much its your car so do it your way and have no interest in keeping things as factory.
If I think it works better for me I'll do it. I also have no recolection of insisting my way is the only way, it was just an opinion
I won't comment further on air cleaner position.
Put it wherever you like.
The esm breather pipe reference was in response to the OP comment
"Sounds like i need to revert the air filter to normal position, refit the OE breather pipe, wipe the grille slats and go for a drive."
PS: I have the workshop manual and I was a mechanic for BMC

Yep, fault diagnosis to be:
1. Revert to OE Filter/Breather arrangement
2. Check loom
3..Check fan belt & direction of fan
4. Check for gasket blowing
5. Jack each front corner and feel/listen for bearings/dragging

Well blow me! Loom looks fine, fan working the right way, no signs of blowing gaskets, returned Air Filter canister to original position, refitted short breather hose. And all seems fine! who knew.
