I guess that could happen with mine. In which case it's almost certainly easier and cheaper to put a different engine in. I'll torque the nuts up a slight bit more. Would they take 70lbft or is that too much? The correct setting is 50.
Cheers, Chris.

I'm not an expert, but shearing a stud would worry me - it just happened to me at recommended torque.

Might just leave that one then!

It does make things a wee bit tricky when it shears just inside the block

MINICHRISIS.... out of interest and for future reference you stated that you
had used the Colourtune to' set the mixture on number one'. Presumably you then checked the colour on the other three cylinders so what, if any, was the
difference on the problem cylinder.?? Since, from your exhaustive efforts it
appears that you have a piston/rings problem with perhaps a distorted block
I would like to know if that was indicated by a differing mixture reading on the
'bad' cylinder.

Don't tighten beyond 50 ftlbs - that is already well beyond what used to be recommended. I seriously doubt that's the problem - i would just swap in a hot plug from another cylinder - and carry a few spares with you.

Did I say I used a colour tune? Sorry, I might of done, or asked if I should, or was that the guy before me, who's thread I sort of stole.
Well, I didn't actually use one (even though i might of said I had

).
I checked the idle mixture by lifting a little pin on the back of the carb, it just lifts the piston I think. It's on HS4s, not got a clue about morris minor carbs or anything I'm affraid.
I can't get it to run on four at all now, tryed heating the engine up, then swapping plugs and stuff, but no joy. Ah well, gonna start taking this one out tomorrow, and going to pick up another on saturday in me dads car.
You can have a look at this over the next couple of weeks, I'm gonna try update it every night after working on it. I don't think you need to register to see it...

I'll also pop back here from time to time to tell you how I got on.

Oh, what a pity, that would have been a useful bit of info.
