Is the car called Mervin?

With a "Y", Mervyn. I haven't a clue why. It was named that when bought in 1999. I mistyped my username when registering for the 3rd or 4th time. My previous registrations (1st in 1999) timed out because of not posting enough.
Unfortunately that's an age related (SJ, Scottish) registration plate. The original was kept by the first owner. First registered in Blackpool.

Mervyn is a Welsh male name, maybe a former owner or family member.

The previous owner lived in Chester, from where the car was bought. That's nearly in Wales.

Aah it’s nice that you’ve kept the name. I know many say it’s bad luck to change a car’s name… but I was quite set on my car being called Nellie before I even got her… so Daisy was rechristened

Barely visible in the picture, but the slightly darker bit, it is faded gold in colour, circled, is a sticker from the original selling dealer in 1962.

I like how you have mounted the additional gauges. That's discreet and tidy. Have you drilled through the metal of the parcel shelf bracket to mount these? I'm assuming the actual shelf material itself is not strong enough.

Can I just confirm… Mervyn is 1962?

I did similar Stephen and picked up existing hole on metal edge.
But under glove box rather than shelf, as didn’t want to catch with leg getting in and out. Also routing capillary temp and copper pipe to oil gauge was easier above the shelf for me.

Neat. When my car is back from paint I will have a good look at where I might be able to mount a single gauge. I like the combined oil pressure/water temperature Smiths gauges. What has prevented me from doing this for a long time is that the gauges are expensive and it is hard for me to work out where it will fit without actually having the gauge in my hand so to speak. Having spent a lot of money on a completely rebuilt engine just over a year ago, the last thing I want is to wreck the engine due to an oil leak on a long trip. On the other hand, the engine survived from new without any extra gauges. It would have to be capillary as the modern gauges don't like positive earth but I don't really want untidy capillary tube in the engine bay or the horror of having to drill holes in the bulkhead.......Talking myself out of it now!

I’ve said it before, rightly or wrongly. I like the simplicity of the Minor, not being stressed out by gauge readings. Chill man !

I agree with Les. After all, you've been driving Xavier happily for around 36 years now without extra gauges, so why fit them now?!

Fortunately the shelf material is strong enough. The holes for the bracket nuts and bolts are very close to the support bar.
There are three gauges there now with the addition of a water temperature gauge.
