The self-cancelling is useful. For many years it didn't work on my car. It became an automatic habit to cancel manually but now I am used to self-cancelling I would really miss it. Whereas, as a teenager I could clearly hear the tick-tock of the thermal flasher unit, I can no longer hear it so I rely on being able to see the flashing of the "green orb" on the stalk. Some owners do modifications so that the indicators being on is more obvious: a buzzer, moving the flasher can unit or an additional tell-tale lamp.

Incidentally I recently found a source for that rectangular (NOT half moon) key that fits in the top of the SII column.
As there was a minimum order quantity, I pointed ESM at the supplier, and they bought a batch.
I can't see the them in the catalogue, but ESM gave me few as a "finder's fee".
Make sure this key doesn't escape when dismantling; its role is VERY important. (It makes the steering wheel work!)

So thats the key to good steering on earlier minors

Just to put this one to bed, I removed the steering wheel and cowl and removed the bolt on the end of the inner shaft down
in the footwell.
This allowed the shaft to be pulled up far enough to turn it approximately 90 degrees and position it between the indicator lugs.
Put it all back together and it all cancels perfectly.
Total time about 30 minutes.

Well done, good result! And to put my little thread highjack to bed as well, I have now set my SII steering wheel back properly. After disconnecting the horn feed to the slip ring, the column bracket did have to be removed from under the dash (not just slackening its securing nuts as the manual said) in order to allow the column, steering wheel and bracket to lift off as a unit after removing the lower pinch bolt.
