Understood thanks Phil. Might go some way towards explaining why when I swapped the halfshaft for the spare the "wobble" reduced.

Is it (a bit of wobble) a problem?

Only a broken stud. I have had all studs replaced with longer ones, and replaced the bearing whilst I was at it.

Yes. I a not trying to be awkward or horrible but this a very serious thing that we sort of laughed about but you were lucky to walk away from. The other side you say. Yes but what kind of loading would the wheel and axle flange have sustained when that other side wheel was lost at considerable speed?

I get where you are coming from, but I can't imagine it's much different for the other side as when going over a pothole. For a brief moment all the load is carried by the other side, then the car sits down on the u-bolt studs of the n/s and equilibrium is restored.

30 thou seems to be common figure quoted on various internet sites for alloy wheels. Why don't you contact the suppliers of your brand and get a figure. Even if its just for peace of mind.
But it staying with side of the car, not the wheel does suggest issue other than the wheel.

I think I've done my due dilligence, and I am happy that nothing is about to break or fall off. Hub nut is tight, lock washer in place, bearing looks & feels ok, hub feels solid & secure, wheel nuts were tight. Not much else I can check really, short of a full strip down of the back axle, is there?
I suppose I could take the wheels to a tyre place and ask them to check for true running, but I don't think I'll be much the wiser.

Maybe the lads were just being mischievous, such people do exist.

I was about to say the same . There must have been considerable forces on the whole axle in that episode.

Now in Brittany, and so far as I can tell we still have 4 wheels. Haven't actually counted them, but I will check later.
