Well, I finally got round to this about three weeks ago and all has been well since, so I thought I'd report back.
It was all pretty straightforward but there was no trace of the dreaded split pins, so I undid the castle nuts carefully without issue. I couldn't see any hole in the chassis stud for a split pin, but no matter as the threads were clean and I was using a nylock anyway. The link was tight to fit, so I wound on the old castle nuts and washer to seat them properly against the chassis and then they were ready for the nylock.
I bolted the dampers to a piece of plywood which I could hold in a vice, which made flushing out/replacing the old, black, runny oil easier.
The worst thing was how filthy the dampers were - it took a fair bit of Gunk to get them nice and clean! All the old rubbers were pretty perished so no surprise there was 'play' in the links previously.
Several road trips later and no leaks.......and, yes, it has improved the ride 8)
