Surely once the timing case has been refitted, and the crank pulley put back on, the timing mark on that relative to the cover 'prongs' is the reference?
As long as that is lined up and No1 is tdc on compression, all is good?
It never occurred to me to see what piston was at the firing point ( if any) when I put the timing gears on. I didn't think it mattered!
