My sentiments too, if the stud isn't damaged I'd leave it in place and clean up the gasket around it. If the stud does need to be drilled out I'd definitely go with helicoil rather than a bigger stud with all the later problems that causes with different sized nuts and having to drill out the housing to take the bigger size.

Just wanted to update that I found out where the small ring goes. I should have remembered but you know what it's like, it seemed so obvious at the time that I didn't bother with a photo.
Those with a keen eye will notice the spring is not in the correct position. It's giving me some agro trying to get it put on correctly.

Thanks to everyone for their help with what is possibly the smallest part on the entire car!
