The Morris Minor club has an aim to promote the use and preservation of Morris Minors, not the abuse and abandonment of them.

I know of people who would like to buy a nice 1960's saloon. Could you please sell your nice Morris Minor- give the money raised to charity, buy a "crap" modern sub 1.0l car and abandon that in Mongolia.

Sorry John, but I have no intention of pulling the Minor out of the rally.

I've spent considerable time and effort in preparing the car for her epic journey. Whilst I agree that spotting a Minor on British roads in pristine condition is a joyous treat, I think that one less Minor is no love lost.

She's in far from 'nice' condition and the use of older cars is in keeping with the spirit of the event.

Bitter, crisps and engine talk in coutry pubs might appeal to you but I prefer to actually drive my Minor.

LOL! I confess, I've actually fitted reclining seats into the Minor.... :S

What spares would anyone advise me to take? Currently, in addition to equipment we have 4 x spare wheels (with tyres!), spare points and rotor arm, HT leads, Disrtibuter cap & fuel pump. Are there any other bits that would be deemed essential by you good people?

I would add to your list:

A Coil, Spare set of Sparking Plugs, Top Bottom and By-Pass Hoses, Exhaust Bandage, Jubilee Clips of various sizes, Gaffa Tape, A Roll of thickish Binding Wire, Grease Gun with Grease, Two large Jerry Cans for fuel, Large plastic container for Water, Spare Air Filter.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Doubtless other folk will add to the list.

A clutch 'relay to engine lever', (they can break) and a few wheel studs (ditto). Maybe a water pump too. How about a rear axle hub oil seal and a couple of bearings?

Fuses and lightbulbs!

Throttle return spring (speaking from experience)!

Back to your question about how far a Minor has been driven -
I guess the London - Sidney marathon (last year) answers what you asked the land of Oz

Minors have been driven hundreds of thousands of miles - just not all in the same direction!

do you fancy having a go at that rally in the raymobile then ray?

I'll be too busy with the Plymouth-Dakar Rally for this year.
Next year I'm toying with the idea of doing a round the world trip... (just got the job and mortgage in the way tho )

I actually think your comment about beer crisps and country pubs was meant to be slightly offensive! I hope not as that is against the rules and spirit of the message board, that sort of comment is not the best here, especially if you're trying to raise money. Offensive also to those who do just keep their cars for club events and meetings.

and for the record, I do drive my cars- as everyday cars as well as to the local club meet, to local shows and to drive to work and take stuff to the tip.

Its just that I find it distasteful to drive a poor old Moggie 8000 miles and then abandon it to its fate......

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to ship the Moggy back to the UK?

Surely having been driven to Mongolia would increase a Mog's value. I mean, how cool would it be to say 'this one's been to Mongolia and she's still in good shape..' and have the pics to back it up.

I know it would cost a packet to get it back, but any abandoned Mog is a sad thing.

As for 'one less Morris being no great loss', ' ...ask not for whom the bell tolls...'
