New/old reverse idler and shaft fitted with no problems courtesy of Mirabelle Classic Cars. I think what happened was that the old shaft was oversized and forced into the box when it was built which explains why the old shaft was so difficult to get out and it might explain why the bush in the idler wore quite so catastrophically.

I can highly recommend Andrew at Mirabelle classics http://www.mirabelleclassiccars.co.uk/gearbox.html for gearbox bits Useful free advice, good quality parts and a quick turnaround. Sorry ESM! but you've had lot's of my money and will get plenty more.

Good advice thanks guys, the new/old shaft fitted beautifully. I fitted a new layshaft and gear as well.

Well chuffed with the results, my first gearbox. I managed to fire one of the springs from the anti rattle plungers on the remote control across the garage, so had to replace that, I also put one of the detent balls in the wrong hole underneath and it took about 20 minutes to get it out again, but other than that it went together well.

Now.....onto the engine
