Could be a coincidence. Probably the first test would be to ground the wire at the sender and see if the gauge goes to full and shows empty with the wire disconnected then prime suspect would be the sender.
Either gone faulty, jammed at a position or float fallen off, or your modified sender could have become detached.
You have got the resistances from earlier so you can test the sender with a multimeter.

Gauge works fine with another Ford sender just reads high again

The unit is complete and likewise the float

Just fixed a stuck Series MM sender. 4 ohms to 83 is the range seen. Might help?

If you have a mismatch tank sender then you need one of these. It can match any sender to any gauge.
