Iv got a 4.55 diff you can try and you could buy it if you get on with it. I don't want much for it. I'm near Dulverton so probably not to far away.

Ah, thanks... but I'd found and ordered one straight away... already on it's way. I've got gaskets and seals to hand too.

I'd gathered all the bits over the week, so today was diff swap day. All went pretty well, I think.

Interestingly, the diff that I took out was marked 8/43 on the casing (5.375:1). This is, I believe, an MM ratio, however, the axle is the correct series II type, 1 piece. I noted that the casing isn't stamped MOWOG (although internal parts are), and the crown wheel isn't marked with a ratio. Assuming the MM had a completely different diff, I'm wondering if this one is from something else - an A30 / A35 or similar?

Anyways, the 4.55 diff seems in decent working order. There's a little noise - like a very fast tapping / tinkling sound. I seem to remember a previous Minor did that too so I'm not too concerned. It's happier on the road, 40 - 45 is okay, and even 50 isn't torture!

Regarding speedo, I checked it against sat nav and from speedo reading 20mph up to 60mph, it seems to read consistently 10mph fast. I'd expected it to be proportionate, so the difference would increase with speed. Any variation is within a couple of MPH. Seems odd, but I can live with that.

On a personal note, I'm dead pleased to have done the job. I stopped running minors 10 years ago due to a bit of a disability - I've a neurological thing that restricts my strength and sensation, and adds a tremor, which makes maintenance and repairs less than easy. The work took much longer than it should - most of the day, with plenty of planning to work around difficulties. But it did seem to work out alright. Very happy!

The 5.375:1 is the standard SII diff. MMs were 4.55.1 (though I think 5.375:1 may have been offered as an option) and did indeed have a totally different (Nuffield) design
