It is clear that power without handling is no good at all. It also depends on how your car develops its power as to how enjoyable it will be. There is no point in a high reving motor if you do not intend to exploit it. Even then a high rever will always seem more edgy than a motor producing similar power figures but with a more healthy torque rating.
I don't think anyone here seriously believes that any modded moggy will be a challenge to the Subaru Impressa's. If it was then I think you will have clearly missed the point of modifying. Ultimate power is a personal choice, and to be honest no one really needs more than 120bhp for road use.
The idea of modification in my view and the methods we employ to our goals are to enhance and develop the original cars character. If you want a Subaru beater by an Evo.
I do think some comments on modern cars a a little unfair. They have to be all things to all people nowadays. A road burner one minuet then a quiet town car, and possibly fammily load lugger with reasonable economy. I believe that most modern cars are excellent value, and that there really is'nt a bad one outthere nowadays. Cars have different roles to different people. Some only want an Ato B motor, don't care what it is, what colour, age, or condition. To another image is everything, it must be the latest, fastest, most desirable car available. These criteria also apply to the minor owner, and its a great credit to the cars design that both approaches are within reach.

Yes - it seems a fairly easy going shopping trolley.

Exactly! Driving a tuned 100+ BHP Minor is a completely different experience than driving a 300 BHP modern car. It's far more 'seat of your pants' and exciting.

thats why we all drive minors!!

I have to agree with Jonathon, even with all my suspension and brake mods and 85-90bhp i often get the feeling that i have got more power than the car can take when you start pushing it hard..

If you look at the JLH kit they strengthan the shell and i belive the steering rack mounts to take the k series..

Multi link rear end and the coil over front are a prerequist for 100bhp +

I can feel my rear axle move from side to side with 85 ish bhp.

Even with spax dampers and antiroll bars and brand new 14" goodyear eagle rubber Emily can feel decidly unsave on a windy motorway if you start pushing up to 80-90

Unless you go as far as JLH do or REALY know what you are doing Minors are best with a tuned 1300 as they cannot take the power or high speeds that more torque and bhp will give.

As the others say if you want to go playing with subaru and evo's you need a modern car or a modern bespoke chassis with a minor body on.
My brother's daily driver is an Astra Coupe Turbo. 180 bhp through the front wheels. Absolute madness. Even with all the electronic techno wizardry as standard it struggles on anything other than a pan flat straight road to use all the power

My wife has a 1800 Zetec s Mondeo with 115bhp that shows it's traction control light if you boot it in 3rd
