Hry guys sorry but still seems to be something wrong over 40 mph she seems restricted going to do yhe rest of the checks that was recommended and see if it does anything else. The carb piston sticks but only when right at the top it does drop and clunks everywhere else

Have you checked the valve gaps and the compressions? Try another coil - although we know it's never the coil..... Could be a burned valve - something like that....

I haven't got her over 40 yet as no where to test but can test it tomorrow and see what happens she's certainly running better than before but from where I have driven I seem to get the odd pulling back feeling then the problem goes
I have checked and adjusted tappets at 12 thou inlet and 15 thou exhaust when trying to find the fault.
My plugs are beige other than number 3 which seems to be a bit wet but there is oil sitting in the plug hole on the outside.
I have cleaned the coil connections
And put carb cleaner through
And has not got rid of the new problem
Will wait for it go cold and will try start it again. it struggled earlier but think it was idle and choke adjustment out.

Better do a compression test to see what's going on inside. It's a great tool to have.

Not long done one as done head gasket and had to unblock an oil feed block that was stopping oil get to the top. Sorted that now will do another compression test in a bit and call back the readings. This car is driving me up the wall haha

Currently going to just try get timing properly as if I set it to the original position of the old distributor which was at factory setting it was pinking like mad, backed it off and idled lovely well now can't get over 20/30 adjusted it again and now can get a bit more but idle seems a bit to high still feel restricted and when I turn the car off the engine jumps

Compressions are reading a bit too high to be believed as true - but it's the variation that matters - obviously something not quite right in #2. Is the vac advance in THIS dizzy working Ok ?? It's not going to be valve lift......

Honestly? After I put it all back together and did the compression test I thought exactly the same for number one. And yes the vac advance is working on this dizzy. Is it worth checking tappets are right on number 2 again to be sure?

Well of course - check the gaps. But these readings are 'competition' pressures (except #2) . However the variations are not that great - so it's back to the carb since you have already changed the dizzy to no good effect. Rev the engine up then clamp your hand over the carb intake - this will suck away any gunge that may be restricting flow in the float chamber/jet assembly.

I'll have a look at the gaps tomorrow evening if I can. And really? Well it had been sat in our workshop at work for the past 8 years apprently and many years before that with no history. Inside looked in very good condition and looked almost new. But I guess the fact it's sat for so long is causing me issues now.
I have fiddled yet again with timing and got it to pinking then backed it off a little rather than setting for best idle. Seems to drive a bit better than before so will see if it can get over 40 without issues.
Ah great ok thanks I'll give that a go tomorrow also depending how it goes
I'll report back the results

Hey guys So. ... I have some good news and some bad news

I can never win with this bleeding car
So the problem was still there this morning when driving to work so before I set off I did as you said Roy and accelerated and blocked the inlet
I drove my 13 mile drive home with no problems will see if it was just a one time thing this week.
But when sorted I got home and noticed the white smoke out the back and more when you and accelerate

done a compression test dry and they are the same readings as before. Did wet on number two and on a warm engine it's showing 170
So I guess headgasket hasn't gone (well hope it hasn't only been done under a month ago)
Could rings have gone on 2?

White 'smoke' is either water vapour - or burning brake fluid if you have a failing servo which is sucking brake fluid into the engine... Was this 'smoke' after a decent long run - not just a mile or so ?

No servo fitted just standard drums
This was after a 13 mile drive of nationals and hills.
Also I can turn it back on and smokes a little but when you put your foot down a pretty large cloud comes out this was when I put my foot down ran to the back of the car and just caught the smoke[frame]

Looks more blue than white there.... Any bubbles coming up in the rad when you run the engine with the cap off?
