just rotate the dizzy till you get the smoothest idle and tighten up the clamp when you do .take the car for a run if it pinks then back it off till the pinking stops no need for a timing gun

Done it! Time for a quick test drive. Already seems to be starting and running better than ever. Fantastically satisfying stuff working on a Minor!

At last.... as above - just gently rotate with warm engine to get the smoothest idle. Ideally you should advance it till it 'pinks' lightly on a road test - and then retard it slightly till it's 'not quite pinking' - but this has to be balanced with getting a nice even idle - and easy starting. You should check the vacuum advance is working - suck the pipe and watch to see if the dizzy points plate moves and relaxes when you stop sucking.
