Thank you guys, I will try that. But, although it might run as a motor, is it giving maximum performance? The ultimate test would be some sort of meter test to measure the level of output, maybe running it with an electric drill to simulate the fan belt.
Could be good fun! But I don't know how to wire that scenario up................

If it runs as a motor it's good enough to keep as a spare. For a more scientific voltmeter test you would need to refit it to the car so it can be driven at normal running speed. After your previous woes if the cars now working I'd leave well alone!

Thank you. Yes, now that its all running properly, I certainly will be leaving the car alone after all that nuisance!

It would need a very powerful electric drill to run it for a 'test'.

I cleaned up the old dynamo inside and it DOES run as a motor, but not at a consistent speed. Sometimes quite fast, then slow. Erratic is the word.
I guess its not worth keeping as a spare?

Probably not - as long as you are sure of the connections you used for the test. Hard to see why it would be slow/fast....

Connections all good, but dynamo now sometimes doesn't run at all...............it is knackered. I will bin it.
I did do the 'run as a motor' test while it was in the car, as well as measuring voltage output, and sometimes it didn't run then either. I just thought cleaning it up might have helped, seeing as the brushes were good, but it clearly hasn't. Oh well, no harm done and at least the car is running properly now and that's the main thing :D
