Nearly but not quite Steve...
I emptied the tank of the old fuel and put dome fresh in, the engine turns over but doesn't fire, not sure if the petrol pump is working?, when I turn on the ignition the other day, I heard the familiar "clicking" of the petrol pump but since then nothing(and Ive emptied the tank and popped in the new furl since).
The petrol pump is fairly new.
Any suggestions as to next steps to either test or rectify would be appreciated.

If the pump does not appear to be working, give it a gentle tap, the points may be sticking. Check all connections before tho ! Even with the tank emptied and refilled it should not be pulling a vacuum, but leave the petrol cap off in case .

Hmm, topped the fuel up a bit more just in case, left off the cap and tried again, no joy, just turns over doesn't fire up.
I've read through various bits of Mmoc advice ref the petrol pump and think it's beyond my capabilities (or maybe beyond my confidence to try it?!
I think I'll have a look at Youtube to see if there is anything on there that makes more sense to me than the written word!

Try putting a thimble full of petrol down the carb inlet to see if the engine will fire up

In all seriousness there re numerous you tube videos taking and SU apart, but it is usually the points in the pump if power is ruled out.

Page 98 Section BBB of the workshop manual does a good explanation and exploded diagram.

Yippee! Tried starting the car again today, lots of choke, and it fired and ran! Very pleased. Tried to drive forward a little but rear near side wheel is seized ( I managed to free up the rear near side), not a lot of space to work in as the car was parked to that side of the car port, still managed to get the wheel off, lots of banging and pulling trying to get the drum off, lots more to do.
Good day though, very happy with a running motor!

Good news, after lots of banging and pulling, the second brake drum has been removed, phew - sore fingers after that.
I need advice on how much needs to be done ref new shoes, cylinders etc but I think I will firstly do a search then start a different thread for that.

More progress, all four wheels now been freed up, £15 hub puller from Screwfix helped get the front ones off.
Best order some replacement parts now.
