Taupe is correct (of course -- he is my hero. Have you seen his work in the Restorations area of this forum?)

The part at the tip of the blue arrow should be more or less flush with the flange on the inner guard. The flich panel when installed should sit nicely against the flanges of the inner guard and the outer sill.

I have pictures from my restorations of this area if you want to see how it all goes together.

I now remember that I have already loaded some relevant pix on this site. Have a look at this:

Note that you want the flange on inner guard protruding beyond the inner sill by just the width of the 'nose' of the outer sill. This will let the lower edge of the flitch panel line up neatly with the outer sill flange and inner guard flange, like this:

Note that it is normal practice to turn the flanges inward to prevent damage to the tyres in severe conditions. It is easier to do this at least partially before fixing them together.
