Clearly a duff battery. New one and everything seems fine. Strange that my battery charger was registering the old battery was fully charged.
I will take the old one back at the weekend and see if I can get some money back.

Well done - but don't let it go flat over winter in future! Get a solar charger (~ £10 Maplins or ebay) and hook it up over winter.

halfords will exchange they have a 3 year guarentee

I was told that modern batteries are ruined if they are left to go completely flat, even if they are not very old. This is unlike the older types which could be recovered with a slow charge. Don't ask me to explain the technicalities of it though.

Well that explains why the charger was showing full charge. I suspect it is because the battery couldn't take any more charge so the charger thinks it is up to capacity. I will take the battery back this weekend and see what Halfords will do.
By the way I bought the replacement from Halfords and did a quick search online for a voucher and got 10% off so it came in at £36. Not a bad price really.
I will get a trickle charger to ensure the battery is kept topped up.
When I put the car away it was in January so lights, wipers, heater blower were all on so I guess the battery will have been run down.

Sounds like a problem I had, turned out to be dirty contacts, be worth a blast with some air duster maybe... Just a thought.
