I wouldn't know whether or not it smells of petrol. It's certainly not as strong as the smell of a drop of petrol.
How can it be the float valve? When I removed the lid, after letting it "click" with the engine not running, it wasn't near the top. I also tried blowing down and couldn't blow down when the float was high.
I found my spare float bowl washer, so will try that. Today I noticed there is petrol leaking from the washer where it wasn't before (since I took it off to inspect and damaged it a little).

Ok I took out the lid, sprayed it with carb cleaner and left it overnight. Then tried a toothbrush, but most of the dirt won't come off.
I put the washer back on with silicone sealant on the lid (but not the float chamber side to allow ease of removal.
The float chamber lost about 4-5 clicks worth overnight, but this might be the the clingfilm on top wasn't enough to stop it vapourising.
There is a white ring on the float chamber to jet pipe which is loose. This isn't part that should be on the attachment is it?

No - it's just an identifier. Is that pipe 'wet' ??

It's no wetter than any other part of the whole area, including the heath shield and engine underneath. I don't think it's leaking out the bottom.

I'll report back on the carb tomorrow. I assume the sump is a separate issue and the sump gasket wants replacement too.

The new washer seems to have worked, in that there's no petrol seeping out. The whole carb is covered in nothing more than a fine film of oil that everything else seems to be.
I guess I'll turn my attention to the fuel tank next.

Today I found the washers and the unions were loose on the SU fuel pump. Perhaps it wasn't purchased already built but had to be assembled and wasn't done properly. Will see if the smell stops now.

Now it's either got worse, or I'm imagining things and it's just exhaust coming in as usual? Going to the car the day after it smells bad.

One of the clips was seized, but the rubber pulled off. I think this could have been the issue.
