For emergencies, whiskey? Where I live power cuts used to be common so I have a 5kva set, keeps us warm and runs the micro combi oven for cooking and supplies light. 8)

Mate of mine who lives on Orkney (regularly burning candles) has set up a switch next to his fuseboard so he can easily switch from mains to genny (which lives in a box immediately outside where the fusebox is located - and he's only got 1kw which keeps the essentials (fridgefreezer, computer, c/htg pump) going). paul@srkequipment.com was the contact for the firm which supplied him - they were advertised on evilbay at £62.50 if I remember right.

I can certainly understand the need on Orkney! Although I would have thought a windmill would serve him well..... I hope I never have to use mine in 'anger' - but it's ready to go - will just need plugging in to the house (after the mains has been isolated) and started up. If ever off long enough I will cycle the freezers etc on, one at a time to keep them cool. Otherwise it's the gas fired heating/TV/Computer and enough (LED) lights to make the neighbours jealous !
