Do you spend £15-30 now when the engine is already out or somewhere down the line take then engine out again to change only the oil pump. I'd go with peace of mind every time unless I knew the history of the particular component.

And we can see the 'history' of this pump - and it's fine !

Today's result, 2 say change, 1 says fit old

I see the arguement for changing while the engine is apart. I'll always change a clutch while I have a gearbox off etc.

However, here the existing pump has shown itself up to the job. If I could be sure I were replacing it with one of equal quality I'd change it. But I wonder what will last longer in this case. A used part of proven quality or something new that may not be of such good quality?

Truth is you'll probably be fine whatever way you go. I've not heard tales of new cheap pumps failing.

All of the pin drive short shaft oil pumps as supplied by reputable suppliers are cheap.
For example:-

Mini Spares....................Pt No: GLP142................£15.83 inc VAT.

Moss............................Pt No: GLP142................£19.62 inc VAT.

Somerford Mini...............Pt No: GLP142................£14,36 inc VAT.

Bull Motif......................Pt No: 10M230................£17.00.

ESM.............................Pt No: 10M230................£24.95.

Until you get to the later type pumps i.e. turbo - does the price rise i.e. Mini Spares, Pt No: GLP110MS @ £31.50 inc VAT.
But of course that is not suitable for the above engine.

If you want to pay top price for an oil pump and get exceptional quality consider buying a Mini Spares 'Evolution' oil pump, Pt No: C-AEG410 @ £101.26 inc VAT but you would have to change the drive shaft or possibly fit the oil pump spacer (Pt No: 12G1127) to make it suitable for the engine above.

As I have not physically seen the above oil pump I will not comment on its serviceability but it does seem to me to be a no brainer not to replace the oil pump (especially at the above prices) whilst the engine is stripped especially as the oil pump can be considered the heart of the engine and to replace it at a later date is no easy task as the engine, flywheel/clutch and engine back plate have to be removed to gain access to the oil pump.
I have not heard of any poor quality oil pumps supplied by reputable dealers and I would say that the above suppliers are all reputable.

IF I was replacing that pump - I would look for a New Old Stock 'Concentric' pump... Some of the later pumps have the rotor attached to the drive shaft only by friction (interference fit) and no key. It's not unknown for them to break free with disastrous results. That particular design (pin drive) of pump has not been used in production A series engines for many years now - and I wonder where the source of supply of replacements is..... I still say - reuse that pump !

It is ! We can see the condition in his picture. As I said way back, normally I am of the 'fit new' brigade, but I would have absolutely no hesitation using that pump in my own engine.
