Unfortunately the wheel was then out and the car was not straight
yes - it's a bit of a wasted excercise to line the pip up inbetween the probes when the steering isn't central
Oi!!

- now it looks a bit odd that I was quoting your post as it's not there now

Right!
I undid the OUTER SLEEVE CLAMP and rotated it until the indicator was in a 'nice position' for me.
Then make sure that the 'LUMP' lines up with the two PROBES in the up and down plane (not rotationally - sliding the STEERING COLUMN OUTER SLEEVE up and down). Then clamp the OUTER SLEEVE CLAMP back up.
Then make sure the car wheels are straight by driving back & forth a few times. Then undo the STEERING COLUMN SHAFT CLAMP BOLT TO RACK and pull the STEERING COLUMN SHAFT off the splines and rotate it until the LUMP is in the middle of the two PROBES then refit it and do the STEERING COLUMN SHAFT CLAMP BOLT TO RACK back up.
The steering wheel will then be off, so remove it and put it back on straight.
Job done!

Oh I *see*!
Shows you what I know, and there I was saying to El last night that I couldn't imagine how it could be fixed.
Right. Well, that's something to do when I've got some time! Ta folksies. 'mehaps I'll do it when I switch the stalk for the 'new' one. Won't that be exciting, indicators that cancel in *both* directions
