What a really clever trick... NOT. An already thin nut has been weakened by a hacksaw cut making it into a chocolate bar nut with a nice snapoff point. It could have easily sheared along the cut line when being installed with the special tool IE a chisel.

Aye - there's no need for the slot.....the chisel copes well enough... has anyone opened up the steering wheel to find a nut that DOESN'T have chisel marks ???

Ahh you see, that's the advantage of using a centre punch, it doesn't do the damage a chisel does....

Probably because it was originally designed to be removed properly by someone with a socket.....................

You need a good edge to get the chisel / centre punch against - a square would be fine !

No if, buts or maybe's,----a normal man has a hammer, a chisel, a socket for the nut and a suitable ratchet on his bench. He wants to remove the steering wheel nut. What tools does he pick up?

He might have a suitable chisel or punch.
He is very unlikely to have the correct socket.

He has got a suitable chisel but he's also got a suitable socket.

A hammer and chisel is for when you don't have the proper (or close fit) socket. Simple.

It seems hypothetical, he has a choice of ways to undo the nut, how he does it will depend on if he cares about a nut that can't even be seen in normal circumstances.

And whether he wants to wind up some other messageboard members or not

You don't think, given the choice, it would be easier to pick up the socket, however he felt about the nut?
Louise, a normal man is a man who would use a socket if it was no more trouble than using a chisel !!

Only for a very particular value of "normal".

It's a bit like Schrödinger's cat, Les can't decide if you are normal or not until he checks the condition of your steering wheel nut

Maybe a previous owner was abnormal, would you replace a violated nut?
