Morris Minor Owners Club

Well, I managed to get to where the cable enters the gearbox, and unscrew the cap that holds the cable in place. Unfortunately though, the cable will not come out. I don't want to pull it and wiggle it too hard before asking for advice here though. Is this common, and what should my next course of action be to make its removal happen?
