The 'fin' is a triviality....just fix the brake pipes some other way. Gears look fine to me.

Thanks for that. The gears on this diff do seem ok as far as I can tell. I can probably get a little plate welded onto the fin to attach the brake pipes. I will also have access to a 3.9 diff, so I can compare the two once the engine is modified. There seem to be differing opinions. Some say the 3.9 is a better option for a modified 1098 whilst others say there is not much difference between that and the 3.7

I picked up a mini timing chain kit ( It might be a good time for others to pick them up if the 'obsolete parts' warning stated on the site is significant.)

I found some cheap timing chain covers on ebay: There seem to be two types, one with breather and one without. Are both ok or is one more suited than the other?

I'm still looking for 1275 mini rockers. Are the 1275 mg metro ones ok? I'm also looking for a good mini crankshaft damper.

Cheers

Looks fine to me too. I would just drill a 6mm hole in the fin and maybe use a small bracket to fit the brake pipe.
I used the timing chain cover without the breather as in the first photo.

Your 1098 will have excellent breathing from the rocker cover and the cam follower cover - so no need for a timing case breather - however these are ESSENTIAL on a 1275 engine. The only difference with Metro Turbo rockers is that you will spend twice as much money - since anything 'turbo' obviously increases the value very considerably...... They are all the same rockers.....
The price is right at the moment - although expensive delivery....... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini- ... 19e5c8676e Fixed price set here if you miss that set ...... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-COOPER-C ... 3f2d125398

Thanks. Just to clarify, are the sintered rockers on the 998 mini and 1275 both ok for use with the head?

Yes -all the same...... Not an elegant design when used on a 1275 head because the valve tips are not inline with the pushrods......but it's 'ok' on a standard engine.

Great, thanks. I'm going to try to find another 1098 engine that I can build up rather than taking mine out and having the car off the road. I've not done engine rebuilds before, so using the second engine makes sense if I can find one cheap enough. I can learn as I go. I got hold of an A series engine rebuild dvd. I have found it very useful as a rough guide. Now I have more of an idea about whats involved. I'll post up some reports and probably many questions once I get started.

Cheers.

My ebay 12g940 cylinder head has failed to turn up for some reason , so am looking for another. I have another possibility, but it has had "A light skim to clean it up" according to the seller.. Is this an ok option or better to find one un-skimmed?

Thanks

Thanks for that, I got the cylinder head.

I have found some oil pumps that I think are correct when fitting the mg metro cam to the 1098.

can someone confirm I'm correct.

Cheers.

It will be - IF it is for a 998 Mini - BUT - that one seems expensive to me.......
This one is more realistic.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini- ... 4ac6cb179a

I'm now on the hunt for crank for crankshaft pulley dampers. I've found one, but i'm not sure if it is the one I need. ~Here's a link.

Thanks

That's the one - the keyway looks ok too....(although only a snap view). All too often the keyway is worn and the damper is then loose on the crank.
