It's not external on the Lumenition Cam (top left under the disc as I stated). Maybe should have said upper left? Everything is enclosed within the distributor.

57,
Yours must be a later type then, as the ones I have seen are like the optronic ones with an internal module and an extenal module. I read what you stated, just thought there was another external unit  It looks like they have improved their design then somewhat over the years!

And maybe the melting point too!
To be fair though, this one's been in place for about three years now and given no trouble at all. I'm very pleased with it. I may, however, go for the Aldon unit to fit in my saloon, it's still positive earthed. As far as I know Lumenition only supply a unit for negative earth. Although they may have caught up in that respect as well.

electronic ignition continued

Post by ColinChandler »

Hello all,
Bought myself an Aldon Ignitor electronic ignition kit today. Its the one that fits inside the distributer. Does anyone have any feelings about a coil to go with it? The Aldon website mentions a few but as my engine isnt modified, the one they recommend is 'for town and occasional motorway use.' I'm just curious about the 'occasional motorway use' part of it as I do use it on longish runs. Alternatively, will any bog standard coil do? Any comments or experiences are as usual always welcome.
Thanks, Colin.

Hello Cam,
Thanks for that. It keeps it simple and'll keep me out of mischief over the holiday.
Cheers, Colin.

There is some question as to if the coild should ever be changed. In my LandRover (think A series engine on some serious steroids) I fitted electronic ignition and and a larger coil (all under the best advice) to increase the efficently of the LPG conversion.

The "Bugger" is that the rotor arm and distributer cap are not up to the higher voltage.

The final solution after a whole heap of buzzarding around (The prince of darkness coils don't seem to last any time at all) was a slightly larger ballast resistor on the High performance coil to bring it's output down to standard spec.

My advice is that if the coil works ok then stick with the standard one !

So you bought an uprated coil, and you then had to tune it down?
