This used to be done on 2 stroke motorbikes that ran on premixed oil.
Never needed for any 4 stroke engine.

I think this idea is bunkum as anybody who has burnt paraffin - say when the wick of a hurricane lamp is too high - acrid black smoke is emitted. That will stick to your exhaust like ---- on a shovel.

The best bet is to remove the exhaust from the manifold and put a jet wash down it which will remove all soot in no time at all. Just be sure to go on a good run to dry it all out afterwards.

I have to say, though, I have never heard of an exhaust becoming so choked for this to be necessary.

My car used to burble before it was laid up 25 years ago. It is now back on the road with the same exhaust but the engine has been reconditioned........no burble!
Perhaps it is the condition of the engine?

hello, I have tried the jet trick. I put a pressure washer down the exhaust but none of the soot moved. I made sure the exhaust dried obviously. no black water came out its still sooted up im not Shure what to do now any more ideas?

My exhaust looks sooted up though. You'll never get it a metal colour, due to the nature of the fuel burning.

When cold, my exhaust drips black water.

Twice I have put on a new exhaust and both times it lost its burble - for a while, then unaccountably came back. No, I can't explain.

Back in the day We used to scour out odd lengths of copper tube and slot them to fit,gave a nice ringing/burble as I recall.

Torching the car is a bit drastic but it will crackle and pop for a time If you search "exhaust burble" on the net it comes up with some ideas. seems the BMW boys cut a resonator out of the exhaust to get overrun burble The modern Mini club go for exhaust plus ECU changes. I tend to go with the combination of exhaust plus ignition timing, a slack cam chain will also change valve timing on overrun. I know valve overlap has a marked effect, just listed to a Manx Norton off the gas
