I can't comment on the mainland mot figures, but on brake test here in NI the imbalance has to be no greater than 30%. I have never had a problem at mot in 12 years of having my minor. I always carry out a manual brake test front and rear with the car in the air, a week or two before taking to the mot centre.

The brake efficiency figures have got stricter... but only for cars registered in 2010 and later... still 50% for minors.

(Incidently, my transit passed with 98% a couple of weeks ago )

I understand at this moment in time the present MOT testers manual states the requirements of a 50% minimum efficiency for 'service' brakes applies to cars built after Jan 1968 (4 wheel cars built before Jan 1968 actually appear to have a figure of only 40% minimum efficiency on 'service' brakes) The 25% Parking brake efficiency is the same for both pre Jan 1968 and cars built after Jan 1968. So in fact well maintained pre Jan 1968 Morris Minors should have an easily achieved figure at present for the braking test surely.

Doh Think my tester guy has possibly confused 40% for pre Jan 1968 3 wheel cars into this particular scale of figures and it is indeed 50% ?? - sure someone out there will clarify the present figure requirement again.

The 'Service' brake requirements for vehicles with '4 wheel braking' are 58% for vehicles registered after 1 Sep 2010, and 50% for vehicles registered before 1 Sep 2010.

The pre-68 refers to either:

Vehicles first used before 1 January 1968 which do NOT have one means of control operating on at least 4 wheels and which have one brake system with two means of control or two brake systems with separate means of control.

or:

Vehicles with 3 wheels with a service brake operating on ALL wheels and a parking brake operating on at least one wheel which were first used:

i) before 1 January 1968 40%
ii) on or after 1 January 1968 50%
