The engine code prefix '8G' looks like it could be a 850cc, as used by the GPO. Look for Austin A35 van in the list.

Aye - but confusingly 8G was also used for gold seal engines - like this one........ It would take seconds to pull the rocker cover off and tell us the casting number on the cylinder head!!!!

Sorry, twelve hour shifts knacker me. Off Friday. will check out the head then. Where on the head would I find the number ?

It is on the opposite side to the valves, in the centre. You'll need a light wire brush/cloth to find it. If a 1098, then it should be a 12G202 I think.

Chesney,BMCecosse.Brucek,Daveyl. Many thanks for your help.As the not, so ultra reliable, 460 Swedish Scania let it's self down again. And a wrecker got me home, fours hours early, I whipped the rocker box cover off,and stamped into the head IS the number 12G202. As I have a gold seal engine and box,for £50.00, it looks like it was a good days work. The late owner worked for British Telecom/Post office Telephones. Also thrown in the sale was a late NOS, still in primer, LCV Bonnett. Still has the BL Sticker on it. I also got a Lucas Electric screen wash bottle. I assume Post Office telephones, gave up rebuilding engines them selves,and bought off the shelf replacments towards the end ?? Any way, I now know the size of the engine. Many thanks for your help everyone.

Yes, but pretty good, is what I thought. The final episode, full of info, and historical fact. It just lacked, for me, a liitle bite. Still, all kinds of things, on TV, related to railways at the moment.

No - I cant finb it eithr - and it shows...... I was runing this forum on Opera which had the spelcheck - but I swapped my forums to IE to leave Opera for other uses. Think I may have to swap back!!
