There is an article on how to fit the 1098 box to the 803 engine. Maybe somebody has a better resolution.

Declan, thanks very much for the very interesting article, but I cannot read all of it. Is there any chance of either emailing the image direct to me, or of posting up a higher resolution version?
In the menatime, I've rephotographed both of the spare gearboxes (one 803 and the other a 1098, I assume) - sitting on my lounge carpet![frame][/frame]
I've looked at all the bolt holes and they all seem identical, the only difference is the steady cable fitting (with 1 bolt missing) on the 803 box, see next picture.[frame][/frame]
There may be a problem with the 2nd picture, as I've just noticed it is 1.3Mb in size.

The differences are internal - but they can be overcome !!

I suppose it depends on what you want to achieve? If you are happy with the 1098 engine and gearbox, and want to keep the original, very low ratio, rear axle, than a solution could be to just change the speedometer drive (the helical gear on the mainshaft and the speedo drive itself) over from the spare 803 gearbox into the 1098 one. That would correct the 1000 tpm speedo in a single move.

I got the impression the pudding stirrer gear lever was wanted - but it's all a bit confused now !!

The engine restraining cable is missing from the 1098 engine.
I am not sure that you can swap the speedo drive pinion over as the ratio is different and the pinion would therefore not mesh with different pitch worm drive in the gearbox. If anyone knows different I stand to be corrected

Would have to swap the drive scroll as well.

Hello everyone,
Apart from getting a speedo that shows the correct speed, my ultimate goal is to get the correct gearstick location back in for the Series II interior. I do have the gearstick and tunnel for the 803 box. The spare 1098 box does not have an engine restraining cable fitted - I'm assuming the gearbox currently fitted does - I've not looked.
I'm also having terrible IT problems - my main computer will not boot and I will need to get hold of an XP installation CD (can't find mine) to run the recovery console. I'm currently using my "works" laptop. Also, part of my back garden fencing collapsed in last night's stormy weather (still going on), so I will have to prioritise getting the dangerous parts of the fence removed.
I can place markers on the circumference of the existing speedo, corresponding to noted GPS speeds, for the main speed limits for now.

Oh dear - my fence was flattened this time last year - the posts seem to be only good for 15 years max....... Biggest job was digging out the concrete founds for the old posts!!

Declan, thanks got 2 attachments, the "948 box on 803 engine", is very good, but the "1098 box on 803" engine is not great, but is readable. I will also chase the email problem - very strange error.

The results of the New Year's Day speed trials can be seen in the following picture of the fitted speedometer and the Postit Note slivers that were attached when my friend called out the various speed milestones from the Garmin Geko Personal Navigator.[frame][/frame]
We didn't bother going up to 60 mph, as this would have been "bouncing the needle".
The speed trails were carried out on the stretch of the A30 between Blackwater and Blackbushe Airport, in Hampshire.
I also notice that, since adding a signature that consists of a picture of me and my Moggie, that all my past posts are now tagged with it.

Mine is 1960 with an A plate! they just liked giving then out ;) lol

So a ~ 1544 speedo will make it as right as they ever are on Minors !

The "A" plate - the car was re-registered in 1963. Don't know if it was out-of-the-country or what. Even under DVLA rules, I would have thought it shouldn't have been issued with a plate "newer" then the age of the vehicle.
My 1964 saloon had a 1950's plate (234 BVB) as did my 1963 Traveller (6717 PJ) - some registration areas were, apparently, using up reg numbers before swapping over to the "new" scheme.
I'm hoping that, with the MMOC's help, I can apply to have a suitable plate re-instated on my Traveller.
As I still have the old registration document (not the old Log Book, alas) for the 1963 Traveller (but not enough of the car), maybe they could let me have 6717 PJ.
