Also treat a rusty one with Kurust and leave it. This is rapidly becoming a full-blown field study.
Edit. We now know Kurust isn't what it used to be, either.

I have tried lots of paints over the last 30 years, Frost's chassis black is the one for me, good coverage, easy to apply, looks authentic and seems to offer a long term protection. Follow this link for details of product.

I agree with Chicken John. I can also recommend the Brantho Korrux 3 in 1. I did the chassis on the MG with it. It covers very well.

Hammerite smooth for wheels.
Hammerite original crackle finish for underneath.
Keep any spare for wrought iron garden gates and hinges etc.
