I've tried today with holding the brushes to the armature, and I was getting some rotation but no more than half a turn.

I'm going to get some new brushes. Do you think I should grease the armature (and if so, with what). And what would you suggest as a suitable replacement for that holding spring? (I was thinking an elastic band, but that's liable to melt/snap)

What 'holding spring' ??? With the rack disconnected - the armature should spin easily. No point fitting new brushes unless you can see that the old brushes are obviously worn out!

The brushes are definitely worn down a long way, so they'll need changing soon enough anyway. By holding spring I mean the spring holding the brushes to the armature, managed to solve that bit though, my mum had a spring that fitted nicely.

What does it mean that is doesn't spin freely? Does it just need a good dose of 3-in-1/WD40, or is it more serious?

Try some WD40 -can't do any harm. But it should spin easily.

well, WD40 and a good clean freed it up nicely. However, when I put voltage through it, it locks up and I can't turn it at all. Ideas?

'When you put voltage through it' - what do you mean? With the motor reassembled - it should spin away nicely when you apply volts to it - but you won't get your fingers to it........

When I connect it up it doesn't spin by itself, it just sticks :/

Windings may be burned out if it's been stopped with current running through.............

That sounds expensive If the windings were burnt out, surely the armature would spin even with current?

HAPPY TIMES! I tried the old hit it and hope, and job's a good'un. Just need to regrease the gears and connect it back up
