To what extent are coils interchangable? I.e. can I put an 803 coil on a 1275, or at an autojumble buy a random coil from another car, say Hillman 1725, and put it on an A series and it works satisfactorily?
Surely there must be something to do with the output and not just whether it runs on 6v or 12v.
Explanation would be much appreciated.

There are 2 main types of 12V coils, the ones that run on 12 volts and the "ballast" type that utilize a ballast resister in series w/the coil, so the coil is actually only running on 8 or 10 volts.

Or 6 volts in the case of my TR7....... And yes - using a low volts coil will give great sparks.......for a short while...... and then it 'WILL' be the coil !! Unless of course the points burn out first carrying a far higher current than they are rated........
